W♥M Updates (July 2008)

It's been a while since I did a W♥M update, I am still working on site.weheartmusic.com, so please visit and let me know what you think. That website is just as an extension of W♥M, we're not moving.

What I'm planning on: find the latest press release from various PR and Record Labels, easier/faster search, view upcoming album reviews, full album details (track listing, release dates, etc), "Best Of" W♥M articles, plus whatever ideas we come up with.

As I've previously mentioned, other W♥M members can go in and edit/add/modify/create anything, and it's quite easy to do! You need to know very little html or css, but it does help a little when you do more advance editing.

Hey, what do you think of my W♥M Notes Logo?? If you look at it closely, it's a fictional music notes that looks like an W and an M.

Anyway, I've noticed lately that a few blogs and websites have started linking to us, which I'm returning the favor here. One of the links includes the prestigious MTV, so that's an honor. If you link to W♥M, let me know and I'll add your blog and/or website to site.weheartmusic.com.

As for the music of choice today, I have picked out Gossip's cover song "Careless Whisper" (originally by George Michael from Wham!).  It's surprisingly soulful and dancey.  I can only imagine Beth Ditto going super crazy singing this song.  I believe "Careless Whisper" is a live song from the BBC Live Sessions.

Damn you! In a good way.

Website Building

posted Jul 12, 2008, 12:38 PM by Vu Nguyen

I've been giving it some thoughts about co-creating and building a website based on google sites.  It's simple enough that anyone can do it (this is key as I'm recruiting co-creators to help build the website).

Since I have many interests, one of the thing I wanted to do was create a comic book or DVD collecting website.  Let me know if anyone is interested, I will register and create a new google site.

Work in Progress...

I am on my laptop as I write this.  Just to paint a picture of how I write, and what method I use:
  1. I do preliminary research on each band prior to listening to the CD.  I write fragmented notes and copy blatantly their biography using google docs.
  2. The reason I use google docs is so I can access this information on any computer, I work between my desktop and my laptop.
  3. I will also be listening to the album and writing/modifying my entry and a song will ultimate catch my attention.  I will then make notes about this particular song and what I want to talk about, etc.
  4. That's pretty much it, typically spend about 3 hours on an article, mostly due to researching and 1 hour of actual listening.  Sometime I spend more time with an album if I feel I need to pay more attention to it, especially if I'm distracted while listening to it the first time around.
PS, I use a great hi fi headphones ($75, that's actually a cheap price) and can really appreciate when the bass comes in on the phones.

Working on 2008

Welcome

I've just been experimenting with google sites, it's actually pretty easy to build and maintain (however, I suggest you know a little about html and css if you plan on editing things on an advance level using its html edit feature).

It is sometime limited (you can't have "negative" alignment pixels for instance), and I'm sure all the "harmful" scripting have been removed, etc.

So, one of the interesting aspect about this 'site' is that anyone with a we heart music account can actually come in here and edit and add their own page.  All the changes are saved in "history" and I think of this as a W♥M WIKI.
