Taking the top honor in the Battle of the Boroughs: Manhattan (WNYC's The Greene Space) the Earth Folk / Rock sextet 5j Barrow prepare to release their debut full-length album, From the Dim, Sweet Light, on June 24th, 2014.
Sprouting from a series of serendipitous meetings and mutual friendships, New York’s 5j Barrow has taken their hometown by storm and blossomed into a band to watch in just over two years. Now, the “Earth folk/rock” sextet is gearing up to release their first LP, From the Dim, Sweet Light on June 24th, 2014. Influenced by the band members’ individual and diverse backgrounds and relationships with the city and nature, 5j Barrow creates a sound reminiscent of The Civil Wars, Of Monsters and Men, The Avett Brothers, and Ani DiFranco. The ensemble also brings a theatricality born from the core members time in theater - Murman spent over a year on Broadway in Duncan Sheik’sSpring Awakening, playing every female character, including the leads, and Hite starred in Bare, off-broadway. During the summer of 2012, original duo Murman and Hite teamed up with Namaky and Hunter to record a self-titled EP, which was released the following January. Once Hunt and Frank joined the family, the six piece began gigging frequently and have been gaining buzz throughout NYC’s most notable venues, such as Rockwood Music Hall, Bowery Electric, The Bitter End and The Greene Space at WNYC/WQXR. To support their forthcoming debut full length album, From the Dim, Sweet Light,
and first tour, 5j Barrow launched a 30 day Kickstarter Campaign in
December 2013. The band received an overwhelming response, surpassing
their goal with over 200 backers. Most recently, the group was honored
to be selected as the winner of The Battle of The Boroughs: Manhattan by
WNYC’s The Greene Space.
