From Press Here Samantha Crain, The
Confiscation, a 5-song “musical novella,” is out today on Ramseur
Records (Avett Bros, Everybodyfields). Crain is an amazing new talent, a
21-year-old Choctaw Indian songwriter from Oklahoma who writes eerily
beautiful, literary songs (she’s been compared to “Judy Garland singing Neutral
Milk Hotel songs” and “Cat Power meets Neil Young”). Currently signed to
booking agency Concerted Efforts, Samantha has completed a national tour this
summer and will continue touring into the fall, including a Hotel Café LA date
on TUE, August 12 and will be joining the Hotel Café tour in October for additional
dates. She is currently PASTE.com’s “Artist
of Week” and today’s KCRW’s “Today’s Top Tune.”
Award winning filmmaker Sterlin Harjo (Tulsa, Oklahoma) has just completed a mini-documentary of Samantha shot in her hometown of Shawnee, OK. Harjo is a member of the Seminole and Creek nations and his films have screened at Sundance and other major film fests – view Samantha’s mini-doc here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KckKq6tHJ2g Says Crain of the songs (or “chapters”) of The Confiscation: “Every second, everybody is being fulfilled or robbed, and when that happens, there is a story. Everybody has a story and they are stories of redemption or they are stories of betrayal.” While each narrative in The Confiscation is of a different voice, they all relate, as do the people involved, through the atonement that is bestowed, or the Judas kiss that plunders all.
