Currently one of the most talked-about
bands in their home city of Portland, OR, Aan began as a bedroom pop
project of singer and primary songwriter Bud Wilson. Over time, as his
songs began to evolve and twist convention, it became clear that they
demanded more sonic oomph than could be delivered by just one guitar,
and a band began to coalesce. Long-time collaborator Reese Lawhon and
drummer Jon Lewis came on board first, followed by producer Jeff Bond
and most recently Brainstorm’s Patrick Phillips on guitar. The band's debut record, Amor Ad Nauseum, released by Portland imprint Party Damage on February 4, was recorded over two years in various studios and a cabin on the Oregon coast. Lyrically and sonically, the album explores themes of the devotion, desire, complacency, loneliness, and desperation. Though the locations vary, a thick thread runs track to track through the release's nine songs. More confident than most debut albums and more urgent than albums from most of Aan’s peers, Amor Ad Nauseum is a sticky, lush labor of love and lust. Tastemakers are taking note. Stereogum says Aan "feels like rock music in 3d", KEXP has them on rotation and recently posted a live in-studio session, and Noisey debuted the video for the track "Somewhere's Sunshine" Aan tours and performs as a four piece, often turning versions of their recordings upside down. Frontman Bud Wilson reaches octaves of the late Jeff Buckley, while rooted in a grittier timbre. Lawhon, Lewis and Phillips match Wilson's caterwaul with cooing harmonies and a measured rhythmic pulse. Their blend of discordance and harmony has earned Aan touring support with alt rock juggernauts like The Smashing Pumpkins and indie legends Built to Spill, and they’ve shared bills with indie stalwarts like Wye Oak, Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Red Fang, Gardens & Villa, Bosnian rainbows and many others. Already having performed at SXSW, Noise Pop, MusicFestNW, and countless dates across the United States, Aan is setting out on a month-long tour in February and March that will take them again to Noise Pop and SXSW as an official showcasing artist, as well as festival dates at Valley of the Vapors and Treefort, and club dates in most of the western United States.
