What does music have to do with social media and community networking?

How can a songwriter or artist leverage social media for marketing success?

The landscape of the music world is changing. Whether you are writing, recording, or promoting, the Internet offers the opportunity for heavy-duty collaboration online. These tools, on their own, are seemingly insignificant but when used in conjunction with Internet marketing to create your own cyber-footprint, they have the potential to create great opportunity.

Sound Advice Ezine: A Musicians Guide To Setting And Achieving Goals For 2009

Its a new year and a clear slate is in front of all of us. The turning of the calendar from 2008 to 2009 is an ideal time to set your goals. I see a marked difference between artists who set finite goals and those who do not.

Think of goal setting as if you were driving in a foreign place - You wouldn’t get where you expect to go without a clear set of directions. Goal setting is like drawing a map for yourself.

This article is designed to assist you in creating a personal roadmap for achieving what you would like with your musical career this year, whether you consider music your hobby or you are making a living out of it full-time.

Many studies have proven that long-term perspective is the single most accurate predictor of upward social and economic mobility in America. It has been proven that people who have goals written down are much more likely to achieve them.

STEP 1: Write Down Your Focus Areas - Here is a list of some areas you may want to focus on. Skip the ones that are not for you and write out a goal for each area of focus. Think big, be unreasonable, and don't hold yourself back.

  • Branding -- Your USP - Unique Selling Point
  • Creating a monthly newsletter
  • Marketing -- What will you do this year for your marketing plan?
  • Social Networking / Online strategies
  • PR -- Getting covered on radio, online, write down where you see yourself reaching out for PR

New Media Pioneer: Erik Sturm of Bohemio Radio

Bohemio Radio is a listener supported radio station for independent artists around the world. They know what it is like for an artist to promote their music, while trying to maintain a creative flow. Now they can express themselves through independent radio without all the hang ups.

Q: How long have you been broadcasting?

A: Bohemio Radio has been broadcasting since December of 2007

Q: In your opinion, what does a good song need to consist of?

A: A simple melodic progression, accompanied by harmony, rhythm, & soul.

Q: What is your favorite band or favorite genre of music and why?

A: I prefer music that has not been scathed by the commercial mainstream. Genres like food keep the menu interesting as all palatable substances have their place in time.

Q: What changes in content laws, broadcasting rights, etc. have affected you most?

A: Performance rights fees and the FCC

Q: A recent study found blogs to be more effective than MySpace in generating album sales, do you feel podcasts have that power?

A: MySpace is a wonderful platform for marketing; however it requires extended effort from the artist to promote their successes. In a information hungry society with little time or none at all, a podcast can supply you with the extended entertainment at minimal efforts.
