From Blue Ghost San Diego’s BOOMSNAKE have leaked a new song from their forthcoming LP via their MySpace page (www.myspace.com/boomsnake). The song is titled “Sample (Demo)” and will be featured on their next full length sometime before the end of the year. In the meantime, ECA Records is re-releasing Give and Take next month. The record was released digitally and on vinyl last year, but will be revamped and repackaged in time for the band’s upcoming national tour. An EP titled Vitamins will also be available on cassette only via Kraken Records and can be ordered on the band’s MySpace page. In September of 2007 Gabriel Rodriguez, former touring member of the California bands Say Anything and Weatherbox, founded BOOMSNAKE as an outlet to experiment and explore different aesthetics and artistic changes in the music he had been performing up to this point. After spending some time in New York City where he digested his previous tours and musical projects, Rodriguez moved to Portland, Oregon in an attempt to clarify the direction of his writing. The result was Give and Take (Gnome Records, 2008). Initial performances highlighted Give and Take and became experiential experiments in sound. The shows satisfied no matter the venue or how many times one had seen the band. Subsequent touring has provided a platform for BOOMASNAKE to further develop its sound. The everyday trials of being on the road have bestowed to the band the impetus and creative inspiration to return to the studio and continue their progression while experimenting with the genre of layered harmonies and minimalist production. BOOMSNAKE has had a variety of artists sit in with core band members Rodriguez and Nathan Aguilar (the Census Music Group, Soca Toa Records founder) during live performances. Aguilar provides a haunting and atmospheric soundscape which is juxtaposed to Rodriguez’s crooning vocals, loops and plucked riffs. The record Give and Take plays as if Leonard Cohen’s moods impregnated the voice of Neil Young given to a child raised by This Heat who had Tangerine Dream for a crazy uncle. Rodriguez’s lyrics outline the absurdity of the vicissitudes of social interactions, the ever dauntless battle of abolishing the ego, and the ticking of time counting down life on this planet. In a little over a year BOOMSNAKE has spread its roots, sprouted up and is budding to bloom.
