Following on from their critically acclaimed second album Let Me Come Home, March 24th marks the return of Broken Records with the release of their new EP ‘Toska’ and a short run of UK live dates. Produced by Tony Doogan (Mogwai, Delgados, Belle & Sebastian) the ‘Toska’ EP is a visceral cathartic body of work that revisits the masterful orchestration of the first album while combining the intense, relentlessly aggressive and turbulent sound of the last. The opening title track is a cinematic requiem that instantly immerses the listener into the world of Broken Records. Toska is a song that uncovers dark places within relationships and tackling their endings. ‘See
You On The Way Down’ combines ambulating rhythm, sparse piano, dramatic
strings and Sutherland’s piercing yet honest lyrics. Leading into ‘Ward
3’, the heart wrenching intricate arrangement sits perfectly over the
echo and drift of field recording loops. Contrasting with this the epic
and uplifting ‘Revival’ returns to thrashing guitars, triumphant brass
and cacophonous percussion closing the EP with a burst of optimism.
