Buraka Som Sistema Launch "Sound of Your Community" Dance Contest, Tour in April

BSS YouTube
Buraka Som Sistema has just launched a dance contest for their upcoming tour, called "Sound of Your Community."  Their video for "Sound of Kuduro" celebrates the music, dance and culture of Angola, but now they want to see what North America has to offer. Full details can be found here, but all entries are due April 14. The winning video will be played during Buraka's upcoming North American tour, which kicks off with an April 17 date at Coachella.

The Vines' New Album, Melodia, out Now
The Vines Melodia, the fourth full-length by no-frills rock-&-rollers the Vines, came out this past Tuesday.

This is a record by a band who’ve seen a lot since they broke into the public’s consciousness, and it’s a record that reflects those changes without forgetting what won them so many fans in the first place. There’s nothing superfluous about Melodia: few of the 14 tracks go beyond the two-and-a-half-minute mark. These are tight, tuneful songs – loud and fast rock & roll, pure and simple, the kind that propelled the Vines into international acclaim. Even as singer and guitarist Craig Nicholls now copes with the Asperger’s Syndrome he was diagnosed with in 2004, which has unfortunately deteriorated enough that as of late last year, all touring had to be cancelled, the songs on Melodia ring as a testament to the band’s talent and focus, and most of all, their dedication to making the kind of rock & roll that sticks to your ribs and stays in your head long past the actual notes have stopped ringing.

Youth Group Hit New York, the East Coast

Youth Group  You may not have had a opportunity to catch Youth Group at the SXSW Aussie BBQ this past week, but New Yorkers have a second chance. The band will be playing tonight at Brooklyn's The Bell House as part of the official East Coast installment of the event!

Youth Group, of course, is in the States promoting their upcoming record, The Night Is Ours, which is coming out on April 7th. They'll be playing a month's worth of East Coast residencies before heading cross-country to hit up the West Coast.

Dates below, with more to come.

Spindrift on Tour, on Wired

Spindrift
LA pysch-rockers Spindrift kept busy in Austin, playing no fewer than 5 shows in their short 3-day stint. Needless to say, they made an impression. Culture Bully, for one, was there to witness their effect, saying “Another band of note was Spindrift, a sort of grindhouse rockabilly country outfit that seemed more Texan than any other band I saw all weekend.”

They're still on tour, hitting up spots on the East Coast for the next week or so before heading home for some well deserved rest.

Read frontman Kirpatrick Thomas's interview with Wired.com here.

Tour dates here.

World's Fair SXSW Round-Up

chair Well, it was another successful week spent down in Austin, with its usual share of BBQ and bands and bumps and beer. World’s Fair artists made a great showing! Highlights of the event can all be seen here.

In other news...

>>>Headless Heroes, whose full-length, The Silence of Love, a beautiful themed album of covers, is coming out May 19. The record is a simply beautiful collection of lost classics and unearthed gems sung with arresting clarity by emerging new folk star Alela. You can download their cover of "True Love Will Find You In The End" here.

>>>Lady Sovereign, who just finished up a great SXSW, will be back in North America the entire month of May to support her upcoming album. She's also just announced in-store appearances and the official release party for Jigsaw, which is out April 7th on Midget Records. More info can be found here, and below.

 >>>Fischerspooner will be in the States in May, too, supporting its third album, the self-released Entertainment (out 5/5). For the live show, the group directly addresses its ongoing exploration of art and entertainment in a show that references Vaudeville, Japanese Kabuki and avant-garde theatre. Longtime choreographer Vanessa Walters has also created intricate and explosive dances that blend a vigorous future pop aesthetic with classical and modern technique, musical director Ian Pai continues to trigger the Fischerspooner song catalog, and new collaborator Andrew Schneider adds a new layer of detailed video art.

>>>Budos Band has an upcoming West Coast Spring Breatk tour. The guys have been in the studio rehearsing new songs and are eager to test them out (and play old favorites, of course). It's never bad to be a Budos guinea pig, so go check 'em out.

>>>Curumin will be in Miami next month (April 17) at the Heineken TransAtlantic Festival (and Budos Band, coincidentally, will be there the week after, on April 24). When he was in New York last, Vincent Moon filmed him playing live and acoustic at the Royalton Hotel. You can check out the videos here.

>>>Stanton Warriors are in Miami this weekend before heading out on a tour.

>>>Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings have more shows coming up, including an April 26 show at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and as part of the Dark Was The Night Live Benefit Concert at Radio City Music Hall on May 3.

>>>The singers from COMO NOW: The Voices of Panola, Co., Mississippi will also be at the New Orleans Jazz Festival on April 24. Naomi Shelton & The Gospel Queens are where they are every Friday, at Fat Cat in the West Village, with a show from 9-10pm. Their record What Have You Done, My Brother? is coming out in May, but the live experience is really something else. It's $3, and it'll change your life. No reason if you're in town to not come down!

>>>Dominican rocker & performance artist George Lewis Jr. (Lewis Forever) returns to Brooklyn's Monkey Town on April 21, backed by former members of Drug Rug and Apollo Sunshine guitarist Sam Cohen, to present a night of wildly unpredictable music & visuals (provided by Narcissister).

>>>Zia McCabe, the Dandy Warhols' bassist and keyboardist, has her own radio show on W+K Radio. She's on every Wednesday afternoon from 11 to noon, PST playing her favorite songs. You can get more info here or here.

>>>World's Fair is on FaceBook. And Twitter. Oh boy!
