THE NEW UP

Broken Machine EP

(Self-Released)

“Vocalist ES Pitcher comes from somewhere in the lost world of alternative rock, near Concrete Blonde and PJ Harvey. Funky bass lines, channel-surfing psychedelics and flute... an intriguing combination of styles.” – The Onion

The Chicago Reader described The New Up as “trippy new wave” with songs that “move with a seething, aggressive kind of dream logic.”  Broken Machine is the band’s third release. Its sound came to form on the group’s second album Palace of Industrial Hope, which reinvigorates funk the way the Talking Heads once did, swirling it with the psychedelic song craft of Secret Machines, the open-hearted soar of My Morning Jacket and the hand-clapping shuffle of Brazilian GirlsThe New Up is set to release Broken Machine on August 26th, the first of three EPs to be released over the next 18 months.

The New Up will play a record release party on Friday, August 29 at the Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco, marking the first date of the band’s national end-of-summer tour: 25 dates, 30 days, 19 states (including Washington, DC!). See below for more information about the Broken Machine tour and download The New Up’s two new singles, “Broken Machine” (MP3) and “Top of The Stairs,” (MP3) now!

IN THE PRESS

The New Up never fail to create catchy pop melodies that are just begging to be sung along with (think “Wave of Mutilation”). Of course, further reflection yields the surprising difference from the obvious alt-rock comparisons, mostly due to the band’s casual psychedelic tendencies.” – Big Diction (LINK)

Siouxsie Sioux and Karen O have had a bastard love child, and that bastard love child would be ES Pitcher.” – Sacramento News & Review

“’Broken Machine’ is set against a heavy bass line, a flurry of distorted guitars, and an occasional sprinkling of keys, with ES Pitcher’s sultry vocals enhancing the sensuous display of alt-rock and post-punk. Most music of the genre tends to be gritty and instrumentally disoriented, but ‘Broken Machine’ emits an unconventional tone of polished anguish and melancholy; it is one of the several components that are responsible for the song’s success...rarely do you come across an EP where the majority of tracks are even better than a preceding album that was impressive in itself.” – Obscure Sound (LINK)

“Superb, tight playing fuels a compellingly varied approach. They have the makings of a ‘Next Big Thing.’ They’re a tastemaker cooked up from a recipe book of their own design - funky and frightening, intimate and anthemic, switched-on in every way.” – PopMatters
